This is a video that follows a good friend of mine (find him on youtube @ OneLewdH22) discing. It is mostly footage of him playing through the Carroll Marty disc course which happens to be one of my favorite so I will defiantly make more posts about that course in particular with a more in depth review. This course is a great course for any level of disc-er. There are even pro tees for the more advanced players and a general lack of irritating pins makes this a great course. 

However this post is simply for the video that features a nice birdie putt by yours truly....if you don't want to watch the entire film skip forward right to minute 2:00 and you will see me make a nice shot.

Frisbee/Disc Golf - Beginner Walk Through in Stability

Picking the right disc

This is a little more difficult than one may think. For the longest time I was using the wrong disc for the wrong hole. If you have no idea what the difference is between overstable and understable then I suggest as a beginner you need to chose a driver and a mid-range that is "stable" this is right in the middle between overstable and understable.
The main idea here is that each specific disc has a natural flight path if thrown level. Some will tend to curve right or left at the end of their flight depending on how you throw the disc.

Frisbee/Disc Golf - Things to consider when starting out

     Okay, you've got some discs but you still aren't throwing very well. Don't feel bad about yourself because throwing a disc is a whole lot different than throwing a regular frisbee. Like any other sport there is very many variables to consider when throwing a disc. Depending on what throw you decide to work on one of the most important variables to remember is to throw your disc level. If you cannot get the disc to start level your throws will never be accurate. It took me almost an entire year of disc practice before I could consistently throw a drive parallel with the ground. The next important thing to remember is the first few steps before you release the disc. Everyone has a different approach to release the disc so you will just have to practice a while until your approach feels 'right'. The main idea is to convert potential energy into kinetic energy....we will get into that idea later....here is a video to show an example of an approach. The cool thing here is the fact that my 'talent' can throw left and right handed....this is pretty rare. Anyhow watch the hand gestures before he throws and also keep an eye on his body motion. All of those odd gestures help a discer to remember to throw level.

Frisbee Golf - Devils Glen Bettendorf Iowa

Devils Glen

 There are three disc courses in Bettendorf Iowa and the first one to be reviewed is my least favorite. This course is located in and around Devils Glen park. Unfortunately the course has only twelve holes, which is a little odd. What this course lacks in holes it makes up in a nice scenic view. The first hole starts behind the baseball diamond and continues to wind around through the park. There are a few holes that take you a little too close to the duck creek so make sure to keep your disc flying right or you will be wasting time in the water.

 Overall this is a nice, well kept disc course that keeps the players entertained with a mix of short straight holes and some holes that take you into the forest. Not too many difficult technical holes that are too difficult to play. Unfortunately there are only twelve holes, but if you are looking for a nice quick round of discing for intermediate players. Ravage Approved: Disc Golf ...what is "discing" or better yet "frolfing"?

According to Wiki

Disc golf is a disc game in which individual players throw a flying disc into a basket or at a target. According to the Professional Disc Golf Association, "The object of the game is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws of the disc." Of the more than 3000 established disc golf courses as of 2010, approximately 87% are free. The game is played in the United States and more than 20 other countries around the world.

This game does not take strength but steady fluid motion and patience. I usually only throw three different disks, however I have up to nine in my bag. There are all kinds of disks...and I believe here shortly I may help new players to find the proper disk

Frisbee/Disc Golf - Middle Park Bettendorf Iowa Disc Course

Middle Course Bettendorf Iowa (holes 1-9)

Check out my video that I put together for the Middle Course in Bettendorf Iowa....I would have done the entire course but it was very hot and I was running out of time. The first nine holes are out in the open for the most part. I really enjoy this course because there are three locations for the pins for almost every hole. Not every course has different places to put the pins...this makes Middle Course interesting and fun.

There is only one tricky part on the front nine....after hole six you need to walk across hole 2/4 to the other side of the street in order to find the tee for hole number 7. After that and depending on the pin placement hole 8 is potentially 1000ft....which is abnormally long for any hole. Lucky for me hole 8 has the shortest pin placement (still over 800ft) ...my day started a little rough, but then I could finally make some decent shorts.

All in all I would say this is an excellent course and next time it is summer you should check it out!

Putting Practice - 13th st course in Ames Iowa

The next few posts will be about 13th street disc course in Ames Iowa. I took some time out of my day and met up with his individual who has been discing for much longer than I have. First we discussed some ideas of putting and how most people like to just throw the putter "willy-nilly" and try to make it arc left or right to hit the pin. If you are looking to improve your accuracy when putting try to get a more sinuous (s-shaped) path. This method is okay for beginners, however if you want to get more accurate please reference the video below for a better method of putting.

As you should clearly be able to notice....even though my accomplice didn't make any putts into the basket.....the motion and path of the disc is more accurate and much easier to predict.
